By now you’ve probably heard of the FREE ebook called What Matters Now in Children’s Ministry (WMN). The creative idea of Amy Dolan, Henry Zonio & Matt Guevara, this resource brings together ideas from 33 top leaders in Children’s Ministry today.

WMN is put together in a unique format – each contributor takes an idea relative to What Matters Now in Children’s Ministry (encapsulated in a single word) and describes why it matters, all in 200 words or less.  It’s a fun and easy read.  It’s thought provoking.  And what is said…well, it matters!

I’ll let you download and read the book for yourself without re-creating it here, but here’s what reading this resource made me think about: What Matters Now in Children’s Ministry is innovatively building on the foundational ministry principles that have already been laid.

Picture two buildings – one from 100 years ago and one from today.  In each, there was a foundation laid and then the structure built on top of that foundation.

The foundations from both are fairly similar.  Yes, the materials might be of higher quality today but, essentially, the foundations are laid in a similar manner.  And the foundation is absolutely essential.  Without it, the building falls.

The structures – what we all see – look very different.  As the years go by, with advancement in architecture techniques, building methods, tools, etc., the outward structure has improved dramatically, both in appearance and functionality.

Foundation and innovation.  Both are relevant to what matters now in building.

Both are relevant to What Matters Now in Children’s Ministry. In our free ebook, called The 360° Children’s Ministry, we address primarily the foundational aspects of Children’s Ministry (somewhere around 75% foundational, 25% innovative).  The 7 characteristics of a 360° Children’s Ministry are relevant to every church, of every size, in any denomination.  They are the foundation.  And too often they are discarded for the “latest and greatest”.

In What Matters Now in Children’s Ministry, the ideas addressed are the more innovative side of Children’s Ministry (somewhere around 25% foundational, 75% innovative).  We live in a changing world and it’s changing faster than ever before.  We MUST innovate and maintain relevancy.  When we do this on the foundational aspects of ministry, we will see dramatic impact in the lives of our children, our parents, our leaders and, yes, ourselves.

So does it really matter?  YES!
